Last month the U.S. Green Building Council announced that for the first time ever it would include an evaluation of the health impacts of building materials in its Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification for green buildings. Public health advocates applauded the news, noting that many building materials—even the “green” ones—offgas toxic chemicals.

U.S. health regulators acknowledged they miscalculated the amount of formaldehyde emitted from some of Lumber Liquidators' laminated floor products. Shares of the company fell sharply Monday on the news.

The Centers for Disease Control And Prevention says the risk of cancer is three times higher than it previously estimated, and it strongly urged Lumber Liquidators customers to take steps to reduce exposure to the substance. The company no longer sells the Chinese-made, laminate products.

The agency said its "indoor air model used an incorrect value for ceiling height. As a result, the health risks were calculated using airborne concentration estimates about 3 times lower than they should have been."

The higher levels "could cause increased frequency of asthma symptoms and other respiratory issues for people with asthma and COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease]."

In China, Diners Pay for Clean Air With Their Entree

Has clean air become such a luxury in China that restaurants can charge patrons for it?

That question raged on Tuesday after Xinhua, the state news agency, reported that a restaurant in the eastern province of Jiangsu was doing just that. The restaurant, in Zhangjiagang, near Shanghai, was adding 1 renminbi, or about 15 cents, per customer as a “clean air fee.”

In 2007 my wife, our Great Dane, Walker, and I bought a home. Walker didn't bring much $ to the investment but he did bring a lot of joy & energy! It wasn't a perfect home, but a home that we'd fix up. And grow into. A sturdy home built in the 40's, it had really good bones but needed a LOT of cosmetic work. We loved it nonetheless. Shortly after moving in, my health started to suspiciously deteriorate. My symptoms eluded diagnosis, but my discomfort and generally feeling-like-shxx on most days persisted. I saw generalists and specialists. I saw conventional docs & alternative docs & research experts & friends of friends of friends who had similar stories. The search for an answer was long, exhausting, very expensive, and even more disheartening. And I got no answers.

I’ve got 5 reasons, to start.

1. Our house of seven years – built in 1948, and an awesome, well-made structure – made us sick. It had a water leak, and mold formed, and that mold spit out toxins called ‘mycotoxins’, that some molds create in an attempt to kill other molds (kind of like male lions eating the cubs of lion prides that they take over…), and which can be deadly when inhaled within the continuously re-circulated air of most modern homes…

2. Houses today are built with energy efficiency in mind – not the health of the occupants. Which is strange….? It’s like emphasizing how the locally produced breakfast cereal is made in a green, solar-powered plant, in the same city you live in, with water catchment tanks and net-zero energy consumption – is still filled with sugar, corn syrup, and other unhealthy ingredients. Making it good for the planet – but not good for you?

3. Because it’s not fair that the people we hire to build or renovate our houses and apartments are subjected to the toxins, pollutants, particulate, and other adverse...


Why that name? Obviously those two things are our two most basic needs. You could throw in love and family as well, but that’s a different blog. We need food – hopefully healthy, nutritious, whole foods that supports a long, healthy, good quality life. And we need shelter – a roof over our heads, protection from the elements and wild animals, and clean air and water – to be able to live as a part of modern society.

Have one without the other? Life suffers a bit – and maybe more than a bit. Shelter without any food means you starve. Shelter without good food – food that supports the body in healing itself from the injuries of modern industrial society (and Father Time…) – leads to protection from the outside world but disease from within. After WWII, as our economy took off and the modern American busy work-life started taking shape, we began to have less and less time to cook food.
